Thom Andersen i Noël Burch tenen en comú el fet d’haver impartit classes a la universitat (a Califòrnia l’un, a Lilla l’altre), de ser nord-americans, d’interessar-se pel cinema primitiu, de formar-se en el marxisme i d’haver fet un film plegats (Red Hollywood), que també és un llibre comú sobre la caça de bruixes.

Andersen va focalitzar el seu interès en Muybridge i els lligams entre cinema i ciència per revisar també la història de l’anomenat “cinema mut” o la manera com als EUA havien estat desacreditats els blacklisted. Més tard ha indagat sobre la imatge de Los Angeles al cinema. Recentment, el volum Slow Writing: Thom Andersen on Cinema (The Visible Press, setembre 2017) recull diversos articles d’Andersen sobre les avantguardes, els llargmetratges de Hollywood i el cinema contemporani publicats al llarg de cinc dècades.

Noël Burch va començar a ser conegut a casa nostra per la seva Praxis del cine quan la utilització del terme praxis era suficient per identificar a quin corrent pertanyia el teòric. Després, amb El tragaluz del infinito (Ediciones Cátedra, 2006) va posar fi a la divisió de la història del cinema entre “mut” — i primitiu — i “sonor” — i modern. 

Burch situa el naixement de la modernitat abans, quan el cinema crea les seves tècniques novel·lesques del llenguatge per convertir-nos en espectadors omnipresents. Després, Burch ha proposat mirades noves sobre el cinema japonès i les maneres de tractar la sexualitat al llarg de més de 100 anys de fabricació de pel·lícules. De tot això ens en parlarà en directe i a través del seus films i dels realitzats per Andersen. Teoria i pràctica.

Temenos 2016 dates

TEMENOS 2016 will take place from 30 June to 4 July 2016.

Over three nights (Friday to Sunday), ENIAIOS IX XI will be premiered at the site chosen by the filmmaker, close to the village of Lyssarea in Arcadia, Greece. This is the only place in the world where ENIAIOS can be seen as originally envisioned by Markopoulos.

Details of bus transportation from Athens, as well as reservations for accommodation in Loutra Ireas and neighboring villages will be determined at a later date.

International travelers should plan to arrive in Athens on 29 June or early on 30 June. Departing flights out of Athens should not be earlier than 3pm on 4 July.

Peter Gidal is a renowned writer, theorist and film-maker. He was born in 1946, and studied theatre, psychology and literature at Brandeis University, Massachussets (1964-68) and the University of Munich (1966-67). He was a student of the Royal College of Art from 1968-71 and went on to teach Advanced Film Theory there until 1984. An active member of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative since 1969, he was its cinema programmer from 1971-74. He was a co-founder of the Independent Film-Makers’ Association in 1975, and served on the British Film Institute Production Board from 1978-81. Peter Gidal’s films have been screened widely, and were featured in retrospectives at the London ICA (1983), Paris Centre George Pompidou (1996), and DocPoint Helsinki (2014). He was the recipient of the Prix de la Recherche Toulon (1974), and his most recent film not far at all (2013) won the 2015 L’Âge d’Or Prize at Cinematek Brussels. Books by Peter Gidal include Andy Warhol: Films and Paintings (Studio Vista, 1971), Structural Film Anthology (BFI, 1976), Understanding Beckett: Monologue and Gesture (Macmillan, 1986), Materialist Film (Routledge, 1988) and Andy Warhol: Blow Job (Afterall, 2008). Gidal’s writings have been published extensively in journals such as Studio International, Screen, October and Undercut, and the exhibition catalogues of Gerhard Richter, Cerith Wyn Evans and Thérèse Oulton.

Mark Webber is a film curator based in London, who has been responsible for major screening events or touring programmes hosted by institutions such as Tate Modern, LUX and ICA (London), Whitney Museum (New York), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Kunsthalle Basel, Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage, IFFR Rotterdam and many international festivals, museums and art centres. He was a programmer for the BFI London Film Festival from 2000-12, and is the editor of Two Films by Owen Land and Film as Film: The Collected Writings of Gregory J. Markopoulos. www.markwebber.org.uk
